Open Question: Employment at Cinemark…advice?
I’m currently thinking of putting in an application in Redding at Cinemark Movies 8 and another at Cinemark Movies 10. They also have a plan (right now it’s more of a rumor but is posted on their website) that they’ll be opening another location called Cinemark Movies 16 (also expected to be IMAX). I want to apply at two of them and when the third one opens, I’ll apply there too (or when they start doing their first hiring). Here’s a bit about me: I HAVE worked at a movie theater before. I worked at Prime Cinemas (a local Northern Cali company). We did box office, concession sales, ushering (which included clean up) and janitorial. No one person (except the booth, move starter, person) were ever assigned one specific job. People who weren’t booth were assigned a specific cash register but if they needed you to clean an auditorium or do a bathroom check, you did it. No specific job for one person. Cinemark is different. The good news is…I have experience in almost all of the necessary areas. I didn’t work at the theater longer than 3 months (from June to Aug 2009). I wasn’t fired or even really laid off. I was part of a summer youth work program for our county which basically got me the job (an interview by the business was necessary to hire, though). The county paid me and I got valuable experience. Another cool thing is the county program required a 3 day work readiness AND extensive customer service training. In addition to not only working there…I ENJOYED it. I enjoyed the professional environment, always being busy, and most importantly the managers. I also enjoyed the advanced employee showings and free movies and popcorn…but that’s a small part…I really never ate much popcorn anyway. I have a resume but the only REAL PAYING JOB is the one I had at Prime Cinemas. I have a lot of volunteer stuff, like through California Scholarship Federation concession stands through our school to mentoring people. I’m even a Boy Scout almost at Eagle (the highest rank). I get excellent grades (this year is a bit harder). Now you know about me, I want to know about the job I’d have at Cinemark. I know the basic movie theater environment…but everywhere is different. Do you think I’d be a good candidate? When do they do their massive hiring? For example, Prime Cinemas told me to come and reapply with them in April for when they do their summer hires. Also, keep in mind I’m 17 and do have a drivers license. On top of all of this though, I live in a town 35 miles south of Redding…so it will be a drive. I’m willing to do it for the valuable experience I may gain. So what do you think? Thank you. P.S. I’ve also emailed the Cinemarks (at their specific email’s on the website) and asked them a few questions and haven’t received a response yet.
